'What legal means are available to protect your loved ones?'
I am delighted to announce that on Tuesday 9 March 2021 at 7:30pm we will be hosting a webinar for you entitled “What legal means are available to protect your loved ones?”
This session will be led by Richard Guy, a Senior Associate from Birketts Solicitors.
Richard has an expertise in wills, the creation and administration of trusts, tax/estate planning for individuals and their families (including lifetime gifts), powers of attorney (including Lasting Powers of Attorney (LPAs) and Enduring Powers of Attorney (EPAs) and mental capacity issues, probate and estate administration, deeds of variation and Court of Protection matters.
"Richard is a second-career Solicitor and joined Birketts in August 2016 as a Senior Associate in our Private Client Advisory Team, having worked in London and Cambridge prior to moving to Suffolk in 2012.
Richard specialises in private client work, and has experience acting for a range of clients from business owners, farmers, high net worth individuals to retirees and the elderly.
He advises clients on a wide variety of matters in this area; including wills, the creation and administration of trusts, tax/estate planning for individuals and their families (including lifetime gifts), powers of attorney (including Lasting Powers of Attorney (LPAs) and Enduring Powers of Attorney (EPAs) and mental capacity issues, probate and estate administration (including estates with international elements and re-sealing of Grants), deeds of variation and Court of Protection matters.
Richard works closely with other professionals as appropriate, such as financial advisers/planners and accountants, to ensure that clients have all the relevant advice for their particular circumstances.
He is an active member of the firm’s Family Owned Business sector cross-disciplinary team, with a particular focus on succession and estate planning for clients in this area. He advises on maximising business (BPR) and/or agricultural (APR) reliefs from Inheritance Tax, alongside structuring succession planning for the family during lifetime and in Wills. He will work closely as necessary with the firm’s corporate, commercial property, employment and agricultural property teams in this field.
Speaking French (although not qualified in law outside England & Wales), he is able to assist the firm’s Notary Public, Louise Long, and other Lawyers with matters involving France.
He is based in our Ipswich office.
Richard is recommended and named as a 'Rising Star' by Legal 500 [UK 2021]. This edition notes that 'he is on top of his game in terms of knowledge and deals with clients in their own language. I have referred many clients for different estate planning areas and the feedback has been universally positive from them'. The previous edition says 'Richard Guy takes a practical approach to his work and is very good at explaining things to clients in a way they understand'.
He is part of the five-member content review panel of The Gazette (Official Public Record), regularly contributing to the content in this area of law to ensure quality.
He is also the in-house editor for Birkett’s regular private client publication, Private Lives.
By way of background, Richard graduated in French at University College London (UCL) before studying law at the College of Law (London) while working at the International Shipping Federation (ISF) in London.
At ISF, he represented the member national shipowner associations at international fora; principally the United Nations (UN) - the International Labour Organization in Geneva (ILO) and the International Maritime Organization in London (IMO) at both working group and plenary sessions. He provided support and advice to members on the international conventions applicable to the shipping industry, in particular relating to human resources (STW) and legal (LEG) issues.
Following this, he trained at a top 500 regional firm based in Cambridge (with a London and overseas office) and qualified as a Solicitor in the private client team in September 2008. He moved to a local top 500 firm in Ipswich in 2012, before joining Birketts in 2016.
In his spare time, Richard enjoys time with his family and his interests include walking, cycling, cricket, French and art."
